Congressman Matt Cartwright began serving the people of northeastern Pennsylvania and the eastern Lehigh Valley in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013. The 17th congressional district includes all of Schuylkill County and portions of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Carbon, and Northampton Counties. In early 2018, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew and renumbered the state’s congressional districts, and Congressman Cartwright announced for the new 8th congressional district, which includes all of Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike Counties and portions of Luzerne and Monroe Counties.
During his time in Congress, Cartwright has stepped forward as a leader, serving as a Regional Whip and introducing dozens of pieces of legislation aimed at helping seniors, military families, veterans, students, workers, consumers, the middle class, and the environment – most of which were introduced with bi-partisan support.
Cartwright was elected by his colleagues to serve on the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, which makes all annual, discretionary funding decisions in the federal budget. There, Matt serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, and Science and the Subcommittee for Financial Services and General Government. Cartwright also retains a seat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the main congressional panel overseeing the full operations of the executive branch of our national government.
During his terms in the House, there is no other Member who has done more to develop and introduce meaningful bills. Cartwright’s sponsored measures typically propose expanded rights and benefits for Americans who deserve more favorable treatment under the law. His legislative portfolio has also focused on protecting the environment from hazardous exemptions and loopholes in environmental law and on promoting pay equity and income stability for federal workers at institutions like VA hospitals, regional branches of agencies, federal prisons, and military depots.
Cartwright has been independently recognized as a leader in gaining cosponsorships and high-powered support within the House for his bills. He has also been named a Moderate Democratic Leader in the House by a leading legislator ranking organization.
Prior to coming to Congress, Matt Cartwright worked as an attorney with Munley, Munley & Cartwright for twenty-five years. Matt spent his time at the firm fighting for the middle class and working families, and he served as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice.
Cartwright is a magna cum laude graduate of Hamilton College, where he earned Bachelor of Arts in history in 1983. He is a law review graduate of University of Pennsylvania’s Law School, where he earned a Juris Doctorate in 1986.
Matt is married to Marion Munley Cartwright and is the father of two sons, Jack and Matthew. The Cartwrights live in Moosic.
